Wauwatosa, WI - Fire Chief

The City of Wauwatosa, WI (pop. 47,102), located immediately west of Milwaukee, is called the “City of Homes,” and is a vibrant, well-established community with magnetic gathering places, walkable retail, restaurants, entertainment and an engaged citizenry with over 20 neighborhood associations.  Wauwatosa is part of the “Milwaukee 7” region created in 2005 to create a regional cooperative economic platform for 7-counties in Southeastern Wisconsin.  The City is seeking experienced chief officers with strong leadership skills as candidates for its next Fire Chief.

The City covers 13.2 square miles and is home to the Milwaukee County's Regional Medical Center, which includes the Medical College of Wisconsin, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and Froedtert Hospital, one of two level-one trauma centers in the state. The City provides Fire/EMS and inspection services to those facilities under a contract with Milwaukee County.  Both Harley Davidson and Briggs and Stratton have major facilities in Wauwatosa. Mayfair Mall, one of the largest indoor malls in Wisconsin is located in the City, as well as many small and mid-sized business. 

The Fire Department is staffed by 97 sworn personnel, with a total staff of 103. Personnel from the rank of Firefighter through Captain are represented by the International Association of Firefighters Local 1923.  The department provides services from three fire stations with full Fire, EMS (ALS), Fire Prevention and Special Teams Operations.  The department responded to 7,005 calls in 2016. All personnel (except for the Fire Chief) must maintain State of Wisconsin EMT licensing.  Greater than 50% of the department are certified paramedics.  The department received its Accreditation through the Commission on Fire Service Accreditation International in 2015, one of 218 departments nationally.  The department has an operating budget of $13,408,585 (2017) and has an ISO Class 2 rating.

Successful candidates will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Homeland Security, or a closely related field from an accredited college/university.  Experience and demonstrated success in a fire command leadership position is required.  A Master’s Degree and 10-years of supervisory experience as a chief officer in fire department operations and administration are preferred. Completion or enrollment with a completion date in the National Fire Academy Executive Officers certification is desired.  The annual salary for this position is $109,000 (+/-) depending upon qualifications.
