Missouri Park and Recreation Association - Executive Director

GovHR USA is pleased to announce the recruitment of candidates and selection process for the Executive Director of the Missouri Park and Recreation Association. The Missouri Park and Recreation Association (MPRA) is seeking highly professional and energetic candidates interested in serving as the next Executive Director. The current Executive Director is retiring after 11 years of service to the Association.

 The Association serves as the voice for parks and recreation in Missouri on the local, state and national level. The nonprofit association, whose members work to provide opportunities for all the state’s citizens to enjoy quality leisure activities, is dedicated to promoting public support for parks and recreation and public awareness of the contribution of recreation to a balanced life.

The staff consists of three full time members who oversee the day to day operation of the Association.  In addition, a person funded through a grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is on staff to advocate for the State’s trails program.  The Association has an annual operating budget of $500,000. MPRA is an affiliate of the National Recreation and Park Association.

Membership in the Association includes over 2,000 individuals from 110 member agencies. In addition, there are about 50 corporate members, plus retirees, individuals, and student members.

MPRA is governed by a board of directors elected by the general membership. The Board of Directors consists of 13 members, four of whom are elected from each of the four geographic regions of the State. Five additional members are elected by the membership on an at large basis and the final four are the officers of the Association.   The Board has four quarterly meetings. There are several standing committees which meet on an as needed basis.

The Association has administrative offices in the capital city of Jefferson City and is conveniently located near the State Capitol. Jefferson City is a community of approximately 43,000 and is nationally recognized as an excellent place to live. In 2014, Jefferson City was recognized by Rand McNally Magazine as, America’s Most Beautiful Small Town. The City has quality public and private schools, a reasonable cost of living, a charming downtown, and several historic buildings and landmarks. The Chamber of Commerce describes the city as “a real gem tucked away in the heart of the nation.” The City has all of the qualities that make it an outstanding place to live and work.

The next Executive Director shall:

  • Be a visionary leader with a strong commitment to excellent customer service and a highly collaborative/team-oriented style combined with a proven track record in a parks and recreation administration or nonprofit management.
  • Have a strong finance/budget background with the ability to find creative solutions to fiscal constraints.
  • Be an active leader with a professional and engaging communication style with respect to members, appointed officials, legislators, the business community, and staff.
  • Have a Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation or related field. A Master’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, Public Administration, or related field is preferred. Non-profit management experience is also preferred. Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or Certified Association Executive (CAE) accreditation is highly desirable. 
  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in non-profit management, parks and recreation administration, or a related field.
  • Have a record of continuous education and training.

The Association offers a starting salary of $60,000-65,000 based on qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include a generous vacation policy, sick leave, funeral leave, FMLA, and 11 paid holidays. In addition, the Association offers a cafeteria plan which can be customized to individual needs with a value of approximately 25% additional to base pay.
