Arlington Heights is also known for the Arlington Park Race Track, home of the Arlington Million, a Breeders’ Cup qualifying event. Founded in 1927 on land that was formerly farmland, the racetrack has been a regional landmark ever since. The current six-story grandstand was completed and opened in June 1989.
The Arlington Heights Park District, a separate government entity, includes 715 acres of land that includes 58 parks, of which five are community parks with outdoor swimming pools and community centers. In addition, the Park District operates a wide variety of special facilities including Olympic Indoor Swim Center, Hasbrook Cultural Arts Center, the Historical Museum, Forest View Racquet and Fitness Club, Arlington Lakes Golf Club, Sunset Meadows Driving Range, Nickol Knoll Golf Club, Lake Arlington, Melas Park Sports Complex, and Heritage Tennis Club. Residents and visitors coming to Arlington Heights enjoy a wide range of entertainment options including outdoor concerts, holiday parades and events, a Farmer’s Market and an extremely diverse and exciting collection of shopping and dining opportunities.
About the Village
The Village of Arlington Heights is a home rule municipality that operates under the Council/Manager form of government. The Mayor and eight members of the Board of Trustees are elected at large, on a non- partisan basis for four-year terms. The Board appoints a Village Manager to administer the policy set by the Village Board. Arlington Heights is a fiscally strong community with a $180M total budget and 428.5 FTE’s.
About the Position
The Fire Department is staffed by 108 personnel providing modern-day fire, EMS, public education and other services to the residents and surrounding area. The department provides services from four (4) fire stations with full Fire, EMS (ALS), Fire Prevention and Special Teams Operations. It is a member of the Northwest Central Dispatch System, an intergovernmental dispatch agency providing emergency fire, EMS and police dispatch services to nearly 500,000 municipal residents , with 246,000 calls annually, covering over 170 square miles . The department responded to approximately 10,000 calls annually. The department’s Training Division is not only responsible for day-to-day training, it owns and operates one of the states recognized fire academies from a state-of-the-art training site. The department has an operating budget of $22,635,337 (2018) and has an ISO Class 1 rating, which is one of less than 200 out of 47,000 fire departments in the country. The Village and the firefighter’s union Local 3105 (represents firefighters and Lieutenants) have embraced interest-based bargaining, resulting in very positive labor relations. There was a minimal use of attorneys in the most recent completion of the current agreement.

Compensation and Benefits
The starting salary range is $ 127,000 - $ 150,000 DOQ. A comprehensive benefit package includes participation in the Illinois Downstate Firefighters Pension Fund, health insurance including medical, dental, and vision coverage (also available to dependents), life insurance, flexible spending account and voluntary participation in a deferred compensation program. The Village also offers paid vacation, holidays and sick days.
